In 1991, Pi Tau Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated  established a youth group consisting of a diverse group of teens from the tri-county area. The overall goal was to cultivate exemplary scholarship, promote high ethical standards, and foster participation in community service initiatives. The vision of the AKATeens is to strive to pursue excellence and inspire community activism among high school young ladies.

 

The AKATeens have participated in the Martin Luther King Jr. Day Walk; served as hostesses at the Day of Impact at the Southfield Civic Center and at Hope United Methodist Church during the Tony Crosby feed the homeless; volunteered to sing Christmas carols at Lasher Hills Nursing Home; donated school supplies to children with incarcerated parents; distributed Breast Cancer awareness information; donated canned goods to Forgotten Harvest and donated clothing to Vista Maria.

The current advisors to the AKATeens  are Carmen Willingham, Chairman; Renee Matthews, Madison Whitaker, Marcia Williams and Bria Mosby.

 

Their signature program, the Pink and White Ball, is held annually in May. At this event, graduating seniors are awarded scholarships and recognized for their academic achievements and outstanding community service. This event showcases a vast array of talent and is one of several fundraisers created to provide scholarships to graduating seniors.
